Carl & Rae

We love when we can personalize engagement sessions! Carl and Rae brought their two bundles of joy (Troy and Jackson) for some fun and frisky pictures on a very gray and somewhat rainy day.

Everyone warmed up to being around the camera with a little frisbee.

Troy was ready for his close up.

Then Carl and Rae got in on the action.

I love, love, love this pink umbrella and Rae looks so cute with it!

Then it was time for a walk in the woods - without the dogs - where Aaron captured some great emotion and a natural ring shot!

But the dogs didn’t stay out of the action for long. I love this picture because Troy is like “Woah!” and Carl is loving it in the background.

Carl and Rae - Thanks for sharing your pups for a fun photo session. We’re looking forward to round two and your wedding in October.

Wes and Jennifer’s wedding

They say that it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day. If that’s true, Wes and Jennifer are two of the luckiest people on earth. Their wedding day was hampered by a continual drizzle forcing plans to be changed for the pictures (originally slated for outside the Nelson) and for the reception (originally slated for a the rooftop at 909 Walnut). Luckily it did not change their laid back attitude and fun-loving personalities.

Details:

Ceremony location: Our Lady of Sorrows

Florist: Village Gardens

Reception location: 909 Walnut

Caterer: Above and Beyond Catering

A quick phone call revealed that the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art will let you bring wedding parties inside for pictures. The only hiccup was that we had just 30 short minutes before the staff had to set up for an event. We made every second count and ended up with one of our favorite pictures of the year - you’ll have to make it to the end of the post for that bit of awesomeness.

The man with the tie in the background is actually a piece of art.

We’ll ask our couples to do some crazy things at time but this one wasn’t even our idea. Any couple that will pose with naked mannequins is ok in our book!

After the museum, the wedding party headed to JP Wine Bar for some hot pictures and a little vino.

And a little fun…

Wes and Jen stole a few moments alone.

The party at 909 filled the lobby with food, drinks and people.

This is a priceless image where everything came together perfectly. It’s sure to have spot in our Best of the Best 2008 posts (coming your way in January)!

Wes and Jen - Thanks for being flexible and not letting the weather ruin your day. We had a great time running around Kemper shooting as if our lives were ending and then kicking back at JP.

Amy is just too excited

So I’ve been trying to get away from teasers but Amy has been patient and just can’t wait any longer. So… Amy… here you go. Sorry it’s probably a bit more abstract than you were probably hoping for, but it is a teaser. We can’t wait to show you the rest!

Holiday specials 2008!

Kim trashes her dress

Kim and Nathan are one of our favorite couples to shoot because they are great fun and the camera loves them. This trash the dress session has been on our “to do” list since the summer when we met them for a great afternoon of shooting. Well, three of us had a good time. Aaron was feeling a bit under the weather so Nathan and I jumped in and provided some art direction for Kim.

Like many of our brides (and me - I’ll admit it), Kim is quite familiar with America’s Next Top Model. We used that to direct her and this is a good study in the ANTM lessons.

Even if you’re not the only face in a picture you have to stand out:

Be fierce:

Take help when you need it. Nathan showed Kim how to work her veil ala Miss J:

Smile with your eyes:

Walk the line between ugly and pretty - results are smokin!

Be fierce:

Use your body to make angles:

Be fierce (yes there’s a theme here - they use that term about 30 times per show):

Don’t be afraid to get dirty:

Take risks:

Have fun:

Want your own Top Model shoot? We’re ready and willing! We’ll get you dirty, snowy, wet - whatever floats your boat. Just give us a call for your own ANTM lesson!

A new addition to the Hawes household

We have a new bundle of joy at the Hawes house. Meet our new studio! We converted our relatively unused basement from a media room to a home studio extraordinaire. Here’s a quick tour and some of my favorite highlights.

The space received a new metallic paint treatment, some modern furniture and a bunch of canvas prints. The back wall (on the right here) is our e-session grouping.

The coffee table was almost our downfall! A week before most of the furniture was delivered, they called to say it would be another month on the coffee table. We couldn’t very well meet with people here without a coffee table so we scoured Kanas City for a suitable replacement. We found this monster (it’s a 4′ square) at the EuroDesign furniture store in the West Bottoms.

Aaron made this gorgeous custom desk so we could have a dual workstation.  The paisley chairs are probably my favorite things from the new furniture, but it’s hard to choose.

The hallway gives a great gallery feel — you might even see someone you know. By far my favorite accessory are these killer vases. We stopped in Z Gallerie on the plaza and fell in love! So many things that fit our style and very affordable prices - it could be dangerous in the long run.

In celebration of our new space we’re offering a great special (see details below and contact us to schedule a real tour)!
